Shinjuku Piccadilly, operated by Shochiku Multiplex Theatres, will screen「TOKYO TAXI」by Yoji Yamada, with English subtitles from December 19th, 2025.
Director Yoji Yamada, who has long depicted people living in Japan, tells a moving story that celebrates the joys of life in the ever-changing metropolis of Tokyo.
From the hit French film Une belle course (2022) comes this moving adaptation—a story of friendship between two unlikely souls on a road trip.
Koji Usami (Takuya Kimura) works every day as a taxi driver to support his family. He should be elated:his daughter has been accepted into a high school of her choice. However, every fare he earns is desperately needed to cover rent and vehicle maintenance, and the looming enrollment fee for the high school makes his existing anxiety even worse. Then, an ordinary shift turns extraordinary. Koji fills in for a colleague and picks up Sumire Takano (Chieko Baisho), an 85-year-old woman making one last journey.
Unable to manage on her own, Sumire is heading for a nursing home. She needs Koji to drive her across Tokyo and beyond to Hayama, way out in the neighboring prefecture of Kanagawa.
On the way, Sumire makes Koji take several detours. As they drive, Sumire slowly opens her heart, sharing stories of her tragic past. This coincidental encounter—a drive that changes both their final destinations—will profoundly move their hearts and change their lives forever.
